Prince Harry was told to hurry the puck up after holding up the start of an ice hockey game while recreating an iconic photograph of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The Duke and his wife Meghan Markle stunned Canucks and Sharks fans with a surprise appearance on the ice and in the stands with awkward smiles and viral dance moves.

Prince Harry performed the ceremonial puck drop more than 20 years after the late monarch did the honours at a game between the same teams, at the same arena, during a visit to Vancouver in 2002.

Sharks captain Tomas Hertle said the prolonged pause for the cameras delayed the start of the game.

“I actually had to tell him to drop the puck because he kept holding it and smiling,” Hertle told SJ Hockey Now. “I said ‘It’s time to drop it’ – but it was a cool moment,” he added. “For sure I will remember that one.”

Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet also spoke of the awkward moment at Rogers Arena, where Prince Harry was invited after choosing the venue for the Invictus Games closing ceremony in 2025.

“I gave him a fist bump, I don’t know if you’re allowed to do that,” Tocchet added to The Athletic NHL. “I did it, he did it. He kind of looked at me but he did it.”

Prince Harry’s late grandmother visited Vancouver during an 11-day tour of Canada in honour of her Golden Jubilee.

The Duke and Duchess, who were joined in the VIP box by friend Markus Anderson, were in Vancouver on a “pre-games planning visit” for the Invictus Games.

It was the second surprise Sussex sighting after Ms Markle returned to the red carpet in Los Angeles last week.

“We are honoured to host senior members of the Invictus Games Foundation including Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex in Vancouver and Whistler this week to visit venues as we focus on delivering the first-ever winter sports program at the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025,” the organisation said.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were supporting the Canucks, which beat the San Jose Sharks 3-1.

The couple’s celebratory dance moves went viral after the Canucks posted a clip celebrating the team’s newest fans.
