WHAT IS IT? A handy gadget for anyone who has trouble falling asleep at night. It’s a “white noise machine”.

AT LAST! FOR YEARS I’VE IMPROVISED WITH AN IDLING LAWNMOWER BESIDE THE BED, WHICH DRIVES THE MISSUS MAD. You’re being sarcastic, aren’t you.

YES, SORRY. ANYWAY, I’M GUESSING IT PLAYS SOUNDS LIKE CRASHING WAVES, ONLY THROUGH A TINNY LITTLE SPEAKER? No, it doesn’t have a speaker at all. The white noise is created by a fan spinning inside the unit.

NICE. Yeah. It’ll “wrap you in a blanket of soothing sound”, masking urban noises from outside. You can adjust the volume by changing the fan speed – and by rotating the outer shell you can alter the tone, too, from a bright sound like a tabletop fan to a deep sound like an aircraft cabin.

VITAL STATISTICS:It’s 14cm across, 8cm deep and weighs 500g, so it’s easy to pack for travel. You can program and operate it remotely via the Snooz app, or simply jab at the old-fashioned buttons with your old-fashioned fingers: up to you.

About $150, available online
