Turnbull loses 30th straight Newspoll

Malcolm Turnbull has failed a key test he set for deposing Tony Abbott as PM but insists he can still win the next election. Meanwhile, in an exclusive interview with The Australian, the PM concedes he could perform better but warns the main threat to the government is a perception of disunity. Inside Turnbull’s office, you’re either “compliant or an enemy’’. One tirade by his right-hand woman sums up the siege mentality. Keep up with all the action in our live blog PoliticsNow.

“We are in a close, tight political environment. The election is absolutely there is to be won. My job is not to be distracted by polls, but to focus on our policies and on delivering for the Australian people.”

Comment: Turnbull must change

In Turnbull’s own words the “trajectory is clear’’: voters have made up their minds and believe his leadership has failed, writes Dennis Shanahan. Jennifer Oriel writes Turnbull will survive but his government is bleeding out in no-man’s land. Graham Richardson wonders if anyone still recalls the high hopes Australians had for him?

Kim ‘open to denuclearisation’

Agony to ecstasy for Glaetzer

Matthew Glaetzer was forced to wait more than 24 torturous hours to make amends for the sprint loss he called nightmarish, devastating, shattering, a monumental stuff-up, a gutting tactical mistake and proof of the ridiculousness of trying to coast through against unknown yet unpredictable opponents at the Commonwealth Games.
