The Mint gets its Royal prefix because it is a branch of the Royal Mint, London. It began in 1872, to handle gold. Another Mint opened in Perth in 1898. These two branches make all the coins used in Australia. All metals used in the coin-making are mined in Australia, except for nickel which is imported. Coins are made by pouring molten metal into a mould. The metal is then rolled to the required thickness and punched into blank coins. The coins are then squeezed, which gives them the raised edge. Stamping of the Royal insignia and date follows in a machine, which also mills the edges of silver coins. As these pictures show, metal worth huge sums of money is kept at the Mint. But speak to Mint officials about their security precautions and they'll say,
