Popular rock’n’roll burger joint is opening new Enmore Road branch (and a TV presenter is on board)
Owner Tony Gosden teams up with Nine personality Stevie Jacobs to take some of Bondi’s best burgers to the inner west.
Popular rock’n’roll burger joint Bonditony’s is set to open a second location on Enmore Road in November.
The new space, on the corner of Metropolitan Road, will take the ’90s rock concept of its original Bondi location and dial it up to 11, with live music, later opening hours, and a long, hand-carved bar for sinking schooners of Young Henrys and Curly Lewis beers.
It’s a natural progression for owner Tony Gosden, a music industry veteran who plastered the walls of his Bondi restaurant with vintage tour posters and named his burgers after the Australian acts he represented or booked (The Jezabels, Dune Rats and Lime Cordiale, to name a few).
For this venture, Gosden has teamed up with his friend, Nine Radio presenter Steven (Stevie) Jacobs, who is best known for his time as a weather presenter on the breakfast television program Today.
The pair picked up the keys last Friday, signalling the end of Gosden’s three-year search for the perfect site. He’d previously considered opening in Coogee and Byron Bay, before happening on the former home of O’le Chicken.
“We just had a gut feeling about it when we walked in,” says Gosden. “It’s almost a complete replica of the restaurant at Bondi … on the corner, northwest facing, with plenty of sun coming in.”
For Gosden, hosting live music is a long-time dream.
“I’m so stoked... There’s going to be a little stage in the corner, and we’ll have solo and duo acoustic acts performing only original music. We might even do a spoken word poetry night. I really want to tap into the creativity of the local community.”
With live music comes the possibility of opening later on Enmore Road, which became a permanent designated special entertainment precinct in March. Gosden says initially, the 40-50 seater will close at 11pm, but ultimately he hopes to call final orders in the early hours.
Fans of the original will appreciate the similarities: the same menu, featuring gourmet burgers made using house-made sauces and relishes; the comfortable fit-out, with band posters and an eclectic collection of almost entirely second-hand furniture; and a thoughtful selection of local beers and natural wines.
But there’ll also be a lush (dog-friendly) courtyard out the back, a larger selection of cocktails, and an American diner vibe. Gosden is building an eight-seat bar using timber recovered from a ’20s Bondi home to cater to walk-ins who want to pull up a stool and chow down on a burger.
“I love Enmore, and I can’t believe we’re going to be one minute away from the Enmore Theatre,” Gosden says. “I’m a pretty straight-up, black-and-white bloke but this just felt right, like it was meant to happen.”
Bonditony’s Enmore is expected to open in late November.
