Bagan

Asian$$

Squeeze yourself into this tiny neighbourhood restaurant for a taste of Burma's best. A huge laminated menu works its way from various fried entrees (try pork intestines, 'long melon' or tofu) to exotic salads, soups, dry or wet noodles, stir-fries, curries and seafood. Pae parata, a round savoury pastry slathered with pureed peas and crispy fried onion, is dangerously scoffable. The fried stuff can be a bit batter-heavy but fish cake salad or soft, wobbling tofu in spicy marinade have beautifully fresh, clean flavours. There's plenty for the adventurous - chicken feet salad, anyone? - and cheap, bottomless cups of Burmese tea to wash it all down. What's not to love?
