The venue food nerds will point to as the epicentre of Sydney's recent burger boom is closing its doors. On August 18 Chur Burger will sell its last Daddy Mac and sweet potato fries at the Albion Street shopfront.

The story has become part of local burger folklore. In 2013 Warren Turnbull opened Chur Burger in the fire-ravaged former premises of his chef-hatted Surry Hills restaurant, pipping a peloton of celebrity chefs, including Neil Perry and Shannon Bennett, in the rush to burger spin-offs.

As burger outlets popped up across Sydney like parking meters, it spawned associations of burger lovers and Facebook pages dedicated to burger aficionados.

"It's been a lot of fun, but it's time I stopped pretending I'm still 25," Turnbull told Good Food when he put the Albion property on the market late last year.

"I've sold it to a guy who owned a cafe in Coogee, but it won't be Chur, I'm keeping the name," says Turnbull, who believes the new owner plans to launch his own burger brand out of the Albion site.

While you'll still be able to secure a Chur burger at Rooty Hill or the Chur food truck, Turnbull is relocating to Brisbane.

"We want to do a cafe in the 'burbs. After that I'll look at doing something with Chur."
