Bel & Brio opens at Barangaroo
When a sprawling Italian-leaning venue opens in Sydney that's a combination of wine bar, restaurant, marketplace, bakery, takeaway and cellar, the obvious comparison is global food giant Eataly. "We're like Eataly in some ways, but where they are focused on gourmet goods we offer everyday items so you can pick up toothpaste with your cold-pressed juice and fresh bread," says Tommy Rogulj, a director at Bel & Brio. The ambitious venue, which has a fitout worthy of a luxe Venetian villa, is on schedule to open later this week at Barangaroo.
Bel & Brio has some promising names attached. Vanessa Martin, from the hatted but now past tense Balmain restaurant, Il Piave, is in the kitchen with Andrea Assenza, and Jon Osbeiston is the wine ambassador. "'Bel' is for beautiful and 'Brio' is for lively and full of zest," Rogulj says. "While we're European, we're strongly Italian biased."
