New inner west pizzeria promises ‘something Sydney has never seen before’
All the details on the new family-friendly restaurant from the team behind My Mother’s Cousin in Bexley North and Self Raised Bread Shoppe.
Slices of supersized, New York-style pizza are coming to Marrickville when the team behind Bexley North pizzeria My Mother’s Cousin opens MMC Slice Shoppe on December 5.
They’ll be serving the kinds of slices – such as cheese, pepperoni and mushroom – that can be found all over the five boroughs.
“Thin, crispy, and easy enough to fold in half and eat on the go,” says co-owner Sal Senan.
“The style of pizza is something Sydney has never really seen before.”
MMC occupies the former Barzaari site on Addison Road, which is now a 70-seat, family-friendly pizza parlour that combines the nostalgia of a dine-in Pizza Hut with the charm of an old-school New York City pizza shop like Lombardi’s, with upholstered booths, glass dividers, and hip-hop on the speakers.
MMC co-founders Sal Senan, Huss Rachid and Amani Rachid have been planning Slice Shoppe since 2021, travelling to New York to take inspiration from some of the industry’s best, including L’Industrie Pizzeria in Brooklyn and Mama’s Too on the Upper West Side. The team has spent more than two years developing a light, crisp, flavoursome base using long-ferment dough and high-quality Australian wheat.
Senan says the product they’ve created will “sit right up there with the best of them”.
Customers can expect a pared-back menu of seven pizzas, with a quality-over-quantity approach to toppings – and strictly no pineapple. Senan recommends starting with the New York “classic” pizza, featuring mozzarella, extra virgin olive oil, fresh basil and shavings of pecorino romano on a tomato base.
Other options include the white pizza (garlic oil, house-cheese mix, ricotta and caramelised onions on a sesame-crust base), and a hot salami number (Italian sausage, jalapenos, mozzarella, olive oil, basil and chilli flakes).
For sides, there’s cheesy garlic bread, barbecued wings and arancini balls; dessert is an ice-cream sandwich.
The offering differs from Slice Shoppe’s popular North Bexley sibling, My Mother’s Cousin, which combines elements of Neapolitan and Big Apple pizza styles.
“We’re going full New York [with this one]. We’re going to use electric ovens like they do over there. We’re doing 18-inch pizzas only, so one size, but we’ll have slices available too,” Senan says.
Pizza by the slice has been slowly gaining popularity in Sydney, where it’s offered at venues such as City Oltra (Haymarket) and Ta Ta Ta’s (Bondi). But it adds something new to Marrickville, a suburb more renowned for its breweries, cafes and banh mi.
MMC Slice Shoppe will also be alcohol-free, serving sodas, house-made lemonade, iced tea and zero-booze beer.
“We just feel like there are heaps of places to grab a drink in Marrickville, and we don’t want to turn into a bar,” Senan says.
MMC Slice Shoppe will be open for dinner from Wednesday to Sunday. There are plans to introduce lunch service, with details to be announced on social media.
