Berry Sourdough Bakery & Cafe

For more than a decade, this Berry bakery has been an obligatory stop for south coast travellers. The place is a hub and there's always a crowd in the light, spacious, high-ceilinged dining room/bakery. The famous crusty sourdough bread is from baker Joost Hilkemeijer, while brother Jelle creates a range of flaky pastries and croissants, tarts (chocolate caramel hazelnut is a must) and cakes (cardamom pistachio yoghurt cake, anyone?). Join the throng and grab a seat when one appears, for either breakfast (from toast and jam to baked beans with chorizo) or a simple but sophisticated country lunch. The menu is small, leans towards the simple and changes with the seasons. Smoked garlic and tapenade, made from local olives, add pep to potato and leek soup and linguine is served with a very tasty combo of clams and green olives. The cakes, dressed up with berries and creme fraiche, are a just dessert.
