How to book a table at Noma Sydney
Danish chef Rene Redzepi is bringing his lauded Noma restaurant and its entire team to Sydney in January. Cue excitement. What we didn't know was the price tag and how the booking system was going to work. Until now.
A cool $485. That's how much it will cost customers to eat at the Australian tour edition of the Copenhagen restaurant that has taken out the No.1 spot on the World's 50 Restaurants list four times.
The Noma Australia pop-up will run for a 10 week period at Sydney's harbourside Barangaroo development and serve lunch and dinner. Diners will have to pay the full cost at the time of booking (much like you're purchasing a ticket rather than reserving a table), plus a 1.65 per cent credit card fee.
Bookings will open at 10am AEDT on Friday, October 30, and tables of two, four, six or eight are available. Reservations are non-refundable and transferable only if guests are no longer able to attend.
Noma Australia is no doubt hoping to avoid a repeat of the controversy surrounding the Fat Duck Melbourne ticket ballot last year, with reservations for all tables to be released at once.
The $485 price tag doesn't include drinks. If you want to experience the all-Australian wine pairing or a bottle from the brief, global wine list, expect to add that to the bill on the day.
$485 for lunch or dinner is a lot of money, however it's still cheaper than a seat at Fat Duck Melbourne during its six month residency. The cost for Heston Blumenthal's Fat Duck experience was $525 before drinks.
The menu at Noma in Denmark currently sets diners back about $AUD355 before drinks, but most of the staff only have to travel a few blocks to get to work – not halfway around the world.
"The menu development is looking really good," Rene Redzepi said in a statement. "Between our sommeliers and kitchen staff we've already been on six research trips to Australia over the past 10 months. We've gone to as many regions as we can, to get a good perspective on the amazing produce in Australia.
"In December, we'll move the entire creative team to Sydney so they can spend time putting together a menu that best showcases what we've found on our trips."
Noma Australia reservations open at 10am on Friday, October 30, via noma.dk/australia.
