Moment the Rosebery Minimart is ram raided

A GANG of thieves has been caught on video ram raiding a Palmerston supermarket to steal 30 to 40 packets of cigarettes — the second time in just three weeks that the shop has been ram raided.

Management of the Rosebery Mini Mart told the NT News that they believed it was the same group of thieves who had carried out both ram raids.

On Tuesday they returned at about 5am to break in to the shop for the second time.

“We think it’s the same people from last time but they (the police) didn’t catch them last time,” the man said.

“They broke through a window and through the metal security screen, the same as what happened last time … that was about three weeks ago.

“They did it before so they know what they’re doing.”

The trio ram raided the mini mart through a temporary wall made from wooden pallet boards, which was erected after the first ram raid damaged the store.

Video footage shows the three thieves enter and exit the store in less than 15 seconds before driving off towards Lambrick Ave.

The manager said the group knew what they wanted and acted quickly to ensure the burglar alarm didn’t attract anyone to the store before they could escape.

“Three of them came in and took lots of smokes,” he said.

“They opened the smokes cabinet and they’ve broken it too. They took as many as they could carry – they carried them in their shirts.”

Management hoped members of the community would help support the business — which opened its doors on Tuesday despite the significant damage, which also destroyed a slushie machine — as they awaited the damage bill.

“Hopefully customers will come in, we’re trying to keep open but we’ve put caution signs in the shop,” he said.

“What can you feel, they’ve just broken into our store again.”

NT Police Northern Watch Commander Len Turner said police were called to the ram raid early on Tuesday.

“A silver SUV was seen reversing through the front doors of the supermarket,” he said.

NT Police are continuing to conduct inquiries and are examining CCTV footage from the store.
