“Darwin and Palmerston have experienced exceptionally low levels of reported crime in the month of August, overall, as far as we can tell it’s the lowest crime figure at least in the last 10 years,” he said. “The outcomes for the months of August are an exceptionally positive reflection on the commitment of the Northern Territory Police Force and all on the frontline.”

While commercial property crime was down by 28 per cent across the NT, assaults had jumped with alcohol-related assaults up 12 per cent, and domestic violence-related assaults up 9 per cent.

Cdr Hollamby said assaulting family was about as low as someone could get.

“We will be targeting that more into the future,” he said. “Violent crime is marginally up over the, the month of August, 65 per cent of the violent crime that’s been reported to us is domestic violence related, and that’s quite frankly disgusting. I will say for the same month 54.7 per cent of violent crime reported to police was alcohol related.”
