A man who allegedly broke in and stole from an Alice Springs art centre, before throwing bottles at security guards and kicking a police officer in the face, has been charged by police.

NT Police Southern Watch Commander Senior Sergeant Adrian Kidney said about 11.30pm Sunday, Talice security personnel had called police advising an alarm had been activated by an unlawful entry at the Araluen Art Centre, on Larapinta Drive.

When security personnel reached the premises, they allegedly found a group of people nearby filling a wheelie bin full of alcohol.

The group allegedly threw bottles of alcohol at the security vehicle, smashing two windows.

When more security personnel and police arrived, the alleged offenders fled the scene on foot.

Authorities found the bin full of alcohol in an alley about 100m away.

When police arrived, they viewed the CCTV footage and identified one man entering the bar area of the centre, stealing a “quantity” of alcohol and then fleeing.

They found an 18-year-old man matching the offender’s description at a service station in the Alice Springs CBD a short time later.

Sr Sgt Kidney said as police arrested the man and bundled him into the back of a police vehicle, he allegedly kicked at the officers and struck one in the face.

However, he said that by deflecting the blow, the officer didn’t take the full force of the kick and avoided serious injury.

The alleged offender has been charged with aggravated unlawful entry, stealing and assaulting a member of the police force.

He appeared before court today.
