DARWIN Council says it would consider working with the government to make Mitchell Street “pedestrian only” in response to an incident where a man ploughed his car into a pub on the nightclub strip over the weekend.
Three men are in custody after the shocking incident in the early hours of Sunday morning which saw a 38-year-old allegedly drive his 4WD at a group of people before smashing into Six Tanks Brew Co.
A spokesman for the City of Darwin told the NT News the Northern Territory Government and City of Darwin had a “shared responsibility for the night time economy” and that they could work to potentially make changes.

Police called to two alcohol-related crashes within an hour
“City of Darwin is happy to work with them (the NT Government) in regards to the safety and security of patrons attending private establishments and whether there are considerations that warrant making Mitchell Street pedestrian only,” the spokesman said.
It comes after shocking new footage emerged of a brutal fight that broke out after the alleged incident, which shows the 38-year-old driver being repeatedly struck in the head by a male pedestrian moments after the crash. Pedestrians on the scene were visibly distraught in the aftermath of the crash, including a woman believed to be the partner of the man struck by the car that was seen screaming at the driver:
Another witness in the video can be heard, yelling: “Get the driver out! He hit ‘em! He did it!”
Shocked witnesses have described the horrific 10 minutes leading up to the crash.
One passer-by said she had been walking down Mitchell St when a fight broke out in the middle of the road near Six Tanks between the driver and a group of three men and a woman. “The three men chased the driver down the street, they caught him across from Shenanigans, pushed him down and started bashing him,” she said. “It was honestly painful to watch.
“The driver was curled up on the ground, not moving as they punched and kicked him.
“There were a few kicks to his head, and the girl even joined in.”
The eyewitness said bystanders eventually managed to break up the fight after about three minutes.
“Everyone was still angry after the fight, and the driver went straight to his car which was parked further down the road towards the cinema,” she said.
“Moments later we hear his car make an aggressive U-turn and the three men went into Six Tanks and grabbed some chairs to throw on the road.
“That’s when the driver drove towards them. There was a really loud crash. Someone could have easily died.”
The 25-year-old man who was struck by the car suffered leg and back injuries and was sent to Royal Darwin Hospital in a stable condition.
The driver, the man he allegedly struck and another 36-year-old man, all from Darwin, are in police custody.
Charges were still yet to be laid in relation to the incident yesterday as police investigations continue.
