Replay: NTFL Round 7 - Nightcliff v St Mary's

A fast-finishing Nightcliff failed to secure victory over St Marys when a Sam Overall freekick missed the major opening and the Tigers fell three points short in a battle of the competition heavyweights at Darwin Mazda Nightcliff Oval.

Trailing by four points, the Nightcliff forward was awarded a warranted free kick well within scoring distance at left half-forward when the final siren went.

Fortunately for the Saints players and supporters the kick flew wide and the visitors who had led all game won 9.8 (62) to 7.17 (59)

The game opened with St Marys small forward Sam Fowler booting the first goal inside a minute of play and while a goal feast appeared likely, both defences closed ranks and further six-pointers were all hard earned.

St Marys led by nine points at three quarter time and when Joseph Salmon goaled early in the last it looked like Saints had the answers, but the Tigers rallied and booted three quicks majors and had chances to run away with the game because their tally in that final term also included seven behinds.

Goals didn’t come easy because some shots were wayward but both defences held rock solid; Ryan Nyhuis and Ben Vile were impassable in the Tiger defence while Matthew Green, Kieren Parnell and Jacob Long were equally efficient down back for Saints.

Recruited from Tennant Creek and Katherine footy, Green played his tall defender role to perfection and is enjoying his time in the NTFL.

“It was a heart stopper at the end – it was in their hands, but we led all night and I guess in the end we deserved the win.” said Green.

“It was a game where the back-halves for each side were on top but our mids were on top early and that gave us an advantage.

“That’s the best win we’ve had all season – to win the close ones against quality opponents means we are heading in the right direction.”

LIVESTREAM PREVIEW

A heated match is in store when a bolstered Nightcliff take on a refreshed St Mary’s, with both sides eying a chance to climb the NTFL table.

And the NT News will be there to livestream the game exclusively for you from 6.30pm, Saturday.

Neither side are currently at the top, but their recent history of two grand final and one prelim final meetings means this is always a match-up with meaning.

Former Port Adelaide player Hamish Hartlett will make his NTFL debut for the Tigers, adding to the former AFL contingent playing in the NT this season.

He joins a strong Nightcliff side who remain unbeaten on their home turf at Nightcliff Oval, but after a loss to Southern Districts last week are need of a bounce back.

As for St Mary’s, they’ll feel fresher after a week off and will be hoping to bring a revitalised squad to the match-up.

They welcome Josh Smithson back into the fold for the first time in the 2022-23 season, and with Jackson Calder and Nate Paredes have plenty of firepower across their squad.

If you are attempting to cast the livestream or replay to a television, the best result can be achieved by either using a laptop/computer or a mobile phone.

The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to livestream Men’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
