The Greenants’ finest hour in Men’s Premier League has come on the precipice of a potential finals campaign, breaking the backs of the Buffaloes through a trio of rapid-fire third term goals to captain Matt Ryan.
Needing the four points to stay alive beyond Round 18, PINT held its collective nerve during a third term stalemate after Darwin had inched within just a couple of points off the back of some Liam Holt-Fitz brilliance at TIO Stadium on Saturday.
But Ryan would eventually steer PINT into safer terrain and the Greenants were never challenged from there, eventually claiming its fifth and most important win 10.14 (74) to 8.8 (56).
The win keeps the Greenants knocking on the door of the top five, just two points behind the Buffs who have slipped to fifth after Nightcliff’s two-point victory over St Mary’s.
For PINT, Alex Harvey was immense with three goals and a raft of forward entries, while Kyle Winter-Irving provided a contest – something new Buff Daniel Stafford was unable to do with the same regularity.
Earlier, in slippery conditions after a major storm which ended the Bombers v Crocs clash prematurely, Greenants delivered some early blows in a must-win game.
An elite pass from Ethan Penrith set up a terrific running goal from Jett Trotter while PINT’s forward 50 defensive pressure also stood out, with Harvey pinging Tim Eldridge cold for the club’s second major.
Then Dylan Flanigan was the lucky recipient of Penrith’s ugly attempt at a left foot snap which went askew, before another PINT intercept was expertly delivered into the hands of Harvey and the Greenants were suddenly 27 points up
And when Henry Tregoweth converted a free kick early in the second, it looked like game over.
However, the script was flipped with the mercurial Holt-Fitz kick-starting the charge, roving a pack superbly before a marking Joseph Collinson – who was close to the Buffs’ best until that point – was gifted a 50m penalty to slot another.
Suddenly, Greenants defenders went from sturdy to sloppy exiting their defensive half with a dropped mark pounced upon by Holt-Fitz for his second.
The Buffs’ forward 50 was suddenly a hive of activity as they got the edge in centre clearances; Kokwam Niki slashing the margin to just nine points with a snap from the pocket.
After a nimble Harvey slotted his third from the goal square, and two more to Holt-Fitz – somehow getting his boot to a Daniel Stafford roost from outside 50 - the game became a territory battle with neither team giving an inch.
However, PINT held its nerve and suddenly reasserted its dominance from the first term.
The impressive Tom Schott would orchestrate a pair of Ryan majors – the best being a deadly shot from the pocket - before a snap to complete the trio knocked the stuffing out of Buffs.
Greenants coach Shannon Motlop said his team was starting to look more dangerous in front of goals with its third-highest score of the season, describing Harvey’s game as “brilliant”.
“It was like a chessboard tonight, we were just throwing blokes left, right and centre,” Motlop said.
“And nobody complains, that’s the beauty of it.
“They just play for you.
“I love coaching this side because there’s effort and intent.”
