A pacey Wanderers bagged their first win of the season in a low scoring affair against a St Mary’s side which struggled to assert itself.
Both sides had a point to prove coming into the encounter with each having strong lists on paper, but having very little to show for it so far this season.
But the Muk Muks survived a late resurgence from the reigning premiers to triumph 6.11 (47) to 6.8 (44) at TIO Stadium.
Wanderers came out of the blocks the better side using the speed of Beau O’Connell and Marcus Totham in the midfield to dominate the possessions.
And their twin towers of Ed Simpson and Darren Shillabeer in the forward line provided strong targets up front to take the ball.
However, it wasn’t a night for goal kickers with neither side getting much from their forwards in the pivotal moments.
Luke Oborn was a big point of resistance for St Mary’s in the backline putting himself on the line to take the contested possessions.
But in equal measure the Eagles’ defence had turned up to play as well with captain Mitch Taylor shutting 2021-22 leading goal kicker Jackson Calder out of the game.
Brodie Newman was another who showed his class constantly on the lookout for the intercept mark, while Dray Thompson kept himself busy rushing the ball out of the defensive 50.
Steven Motlop, who carried an injury throughout the night, made sure his fellow forwards had their chances to shine providing possible assist after possible assist.
But the Muk Muks were their own worst enemies at times unable to press their advantage in front of goal.
Simpson hit the post from 15m out, while Marlon Motlop missed the scores entirely when trying to take an around the corner set shot.
Dane McFarlane was a force around the midfield kicking deep to find his forwards and taking his own opportunities to keep the scoreboard ticking.
For their part the reigning premiers were best served by Dylan Landt who was constantly busy around the midfield to give his side every chance.
However, for all their ascendency Wanderers were unable to keep Saints out forever and in the final quarter when Calder started to find the ball it looked like the Green Machine could still win.
A McFarlane goal and a renewed effort from the Eagles’ backline was enough to get them over the line for their first win.
“It’s relieving more than anything. We knew we had the talent and it was just a matter of clicking,” Newman said.
“It came down to a four quarter effort. We didn’t get rewarded on the scoreboard, it was pretty low scoring game, but we just kept pressing and pressing and stuck with the process.
“We just had to keep pushing because we knew it would crack open eventually, though it cracked a bit later than either side would have wanted it to.
“It’s a relief to get the first win out of the way.”

Livestream Preview
Long-time rivals St Mary’s and Wanderers will both have a point to prove when they come head to head in what promises to be a firey Round 4 clash.
And the NT News will be there to livestream the game exclusively for you from 7pm on Saturday.
The reigning premiers haven’t started the season as strong as some might have expected, and with a loss to new league side PINT now on their resume have a point to prove.
However, this still has the makings of the side which triumphed in March and with Nate Paredes, Dylan Landt and Jackson Calder has the talent to do some real damage.
In Round 4 they face a Wanderers squad coming off a break having lost both their opening two matches.
Wanderers have been best served by Steven Motlop so far this season and will be looking to him to turn the table against their long-time rivals.
If you are attempting to cast the livestream or replay to a television, the best result can be achieved by either using a laptop/computer or a mobile phone.
