The NT’s highest achieving students are excited to start the next chapter in their academic journey.
The Territory’s top 20 Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training recipients – as well as the top Indigenous student – of the year were announced in a formal ceremony at Parliament House on Monday.
In 2023, 1361 students received their NTCET compared to 1352 last year.
Darwin High School graduate Al-Hussain Al-Ibrahim received the highest NTCET score of 2023 with a perfect ATAR of 99.95.
Just 111 students across the NT received an ATAR of 90 or higher, up by seven students in 2022.
Mr Al-Ibrahim said it was an overwhelming shock to open his Year 12 results, but he was overcome with a sense of relief to see his hard work had paid off.
“It just felt so fulfilling and rewarding at the same time, and I’m still in disbelief,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to doing medicine, something along the science-related pathway, something to do with research.”
Palmerston College student Maddison Lea McCormick graduated with an ATAR of 83.25.
Ms McCormick took literary studies, general mathematics, psychology, and legal studies during her final year of school.
She also completed two certificates through the NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services.
“Everyone says it’s stressful, you don’t think it’s stressful and then you get into Year 12 and it’s a lot,” Ms McCormick said.
Education Minister Eva Lawler said 212 Aboriginal students received their NTCET in 2023.
Ms Lawler said the NT’s school attainment rate also increased across Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, with an overall increase of 2.1 percentage points since 2022.
“Today’s results are a reflection of the hard work, dedication and focus of this year’s students as well as the commitment and support of their families and friends,” she said.
“It is also a testament to the efforts of our quality teachers and support staff who have worked tirelessly to assist our Year 12 students to achieve the best results.
“Young people across the NT are our greatest influence in shaping the future of education, employment, health and wellbeing going forward.
“You are our future Territory leaders.”
