Top Aboriginal NTCET student for 2022 revealed

The Territory’s top Aboriginal NTCET student for 2022 has been awarded.

Emma King has been named the Territory’s top Aboriginal student.

The Northern Territory Christian School graduate plans to “go straight to university” in the new year and is excited to start her next chapter.

Ms King said she had been accepted to study medicine in the Territory but had also applied to Monash University and the University of Melbourne to study law.

“I wanted to be a lawyer since I was quite young, since I was about nine,” she said.

“I think that was just because my mum watched a lot of legal TV shows like Suits and stuff and I was like, ‘yeah, that looks awesome, that’s me’.

“But then medicine, I’ve always thought I want to help people, that’s a really clear helping profession.”

Ms King said she would likely return to the Territory if she did not study here and would dedicate her “entire life and service to Aboriginal people”.

Ms King said finishing her studies was a relief but “not in a bad way”.

“I went to the same school from transition to year 12, so to finish with a group of people that I’ve been with for 13 years, that was pretty incredible for me,” she said.

Ms King said she enjoyed studying and was happy to achieve a “really good ATAR” of 95.9.

She said taking subjects she was interested in was critical to her success.

Ms King said she was grateful to her parents for their support.

“I had their full support and their full love and they’ve been really good throughout my schooling,” she said.

“I love them so much, and they love me so much, and they’re just incredible.”
