A getaway driver of a violent robbery – where a large machete was wielded at terrified staff – was persuaded to become involved, a court heard.

Remi Davis Anderson, 22, was jailed after he foolishly entangled himself in the crime, despite trying to convince his mates it wasn’t a good idea.

During sentencing, the District Court heard Anderson was with his friend Ethan Keipert on May 20, 2022.

“Two so-called friends, Nathan Kartinyeri and Albert Miller, turned up and talked you and Ethan into helping them rob a money exchange shop in Woodville Gardens,” Chief Judge Michael Evans said.

The court heard neither Anderson nor Keipert wanted to be involved and tried to dissuade the others from doing it.

However, the group eventually left the house and parked the car on Hanson Road, with Kartinyeri and Miller getting out and running inside the shop.

“Inside the shop they yelled and threatened the three staff members,” Chief Judge Evans said.

“Miller jumped onto the currency exchange counter, over the plastic security screen and into the office and started taking money.

“Kartinyeri was armed with a large machete. He threatened the staff.”

The men then ran back to the car with the money, with Keipert driving the group back to the house.

Over $30,000 in cash was stolen from the shop, which Kartinyeri and Miller split between themselves and gave Anderson and Keipert $3000 between them.

Anderson, of Croydon Park, pleaded guilty to robbery.

Keipert, of Devon Park, was jailed last year after also pleading guilty to robbery.

Kartinyeri, of Mansfield Park, and Miller, of Croydon, were found guilty by a jury of robbery after a trial in May.

The court heard Anderson, a father, turned to drugs after the death of his grandmother and started committing crimes to fund his addiction.

“The victims of your offending have provided victim impact statements which speak of the fear and terror that they suffered at the time and how your offending has had lasting effects on their everyday lives,” Chief Judge Evans said.

“The store was closed for a month after the offending. The staff were scared and anxious to return to work.”

Chief Judge Evans said he accepted Anderson was motivated to turn his life around for his daughter and was remorseful for his role in the offending.

Anderson was sentenced to four years and three months jail, with a non-parole period of two years and two months.

The sentence was backdated to March 15, 2023.
