Maree Ann Deverix exempt from appearing in court for the first time accused of dangerous driving

A woman charged with causing harm to her 19-year-old passenger after crashing into a tree was over the limit at the time, court documents state.

A Mid Murray woman charged over a serious crash in Williamstown was drunk at the time of the crash, court documents allege.

Maree Ann Deverix, 49, was due to appear for the first time in the Murray Bridge Magistrates Court before Magistrate Paul Foley on Thursday.

Joseph Sanders, for the Angas Valley woman said his client had tested positive for Covid and was unable to attend the hearing. She was excused from appearing.

Ms Deverix is charged with aggravated causing serious harm by dangerous driving following a single car crash on Yettie Rd on February 29.

Court documents revealed the circumstance of aggravation was an alleged positive blood alcohol reading of .08 per 100ml – close to double the legal limit.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Williamstown after 5pm on the day after reports a northbound car had left the road and hit a tree.

Both Ms Deverix and her passenger, 19-year-old Evan Lee Deverix of Angas Valley, were taken to hospital.

The injuries Mr Deverix sustained left him in critical condition and are the subject of the charges.

Ms Deverix was issued with an instant loss of licence following her arrest.

Police prosecution asked for 14 weeks to confirm the charges against Ms Deverix and she was remanded on continuing bail until September.
