An ex-SANFL player who wielded a large machete at terrified staff has been slammed by a judge as cowardly and selfish.
Former Woodville West Torrens player, Nathan John Kartinyeri, 28, and his accomplice, Albert James Miller, 24, were jailed for more than six years for their terrifying actions.
Their co-accused and getaway drivers, Remi Davis Anderson, 22, and Ethan Keipert, 25, are already behind bars for their roles.
During sentencing on Monday, the District Court heard the four men were at Keipert’s house in May 2022.
They then travelled in a vehicle with changed number plates to a money-exchange shop in Woodville Gardens.
“You both ran into the store with your faces covered,” Judge Carmen Matteo said.
“You, Mr Kartinyeri, held a machete aloft, while you, Mr Miller, jumped up and over the currency exchange counter. The robbery itself was conducted with brutal efficiency.”
The duo stole $30,000 during the 45-second robbery, which was never recovered.
The court heard two of the female staff members were able to escape during the robbery but the third was trapped in the store and told not to move.
The men then ran back to the car with the money, with Keipert driving the group back to the house.
Kartinyeri, of Mansfield Park, and Miller, of Croydon, were found guilty by a jury of robbery after a trial in May.
Anderson, of Croydon Park, and Keipert, of Devon Park, were jailed for their roles after pleading guilty to robbery.
During Anderson’s sentencing, the court heard neither he nor Keipert wanted to be involved and tried to dissuade the others from doing it.
The court heard Kartinyeri, who played for the SANFL team Woodville West Torrens in his younger years, committed the robbery as he owed money to his drug dealer.
Brittany Armstrong, for Miller, told the court her client should be sentenced on the more favourable basis that he remained in the car during the robbery, as both alternatives were presented to the jury.
However, Judge Carmen Matteo said after reviewing the evidence she found Miller was the other robber that entered the store.
“They were vulnerable and defenceless and your actions in confronting them as a pair … and while armed with a large, menacing, bladed weapon were selfish and actually cowardly,” she said.
Miller was jailed for six years and six months, with a non-parole period of four months and three months.
The sentence was backdated to September 3, 2022.
Kartinyeri was sentenced to six years and six months’ jail, with a lesser non-parole period of three years and 10 months due to his lack of criminal history and acceptance of the jury’s verdict.
The sentence was backdated to May 29, 2022.
