A teenager who stabbed a man in a jealous rage has been slammed by a judge for his “impulsive and unprovoked” attack.
However, Ian Michael Lovegrove, 20, will be eligible for parole next month after shocking CCTV footage showed the victim staggering door to door for help.
During sentencing on Wednesday, the District Court heard Tyson Wanganeen was out in Hindley Street in November 2022 when he met Asha Briscoe and her two friends.
He and another man were invited back to a house for the party with the three women and they travelled to Ms Briscoe’s unit in Blyth Street, Parkside.
The court heard Lovegrove, who was 18 at the time, climbed through the window the morning after and saw his girlfriend, Ms Briscoe, lying on a bed with Mr Wanganeen.
“You said “Tyson, huh?” and lunged at him, stabbing him in an underarm motion,” Judge Michelle Sutcliffe said.
Mr Wanganeen ran downstairs and out of the house.
“He panicked as he felt blood pouring out,” Judge Sutcliffe said.
CCTV footage shows Mr Wanganeen clutching his stomach and staggering door to door at Parkside looking for help.
After receiving help, Mr Wanganeen arrived at the Royal Adelaide Hospital with life-threatening injuries, including his intestines and stomach protruding from the wound.
After three surgeries and a total of 28 days Mr Wanganeen was discharged.
Lovegrove, of Croydon Park, pleaded guilty midway through his trial to causing serious harm with intent.
In his victim impact statement, Mr Wanganeen said he lost his job due to the injuries and lives with ongoing pain and flashbacks.
The court heard Lovegrove drank a lot on the night of the offending and had no memory of it.
“You agreed that you were probably jealous when you saw the victim and Ms Briscoe,” Judge Sutcliffe said.
The court heard Lovegrove felt deep remorse for hurting a man who was once a childhood friend and had written him a letter of apology.
Judge Sutcliffe jailed Lovegrove for four years and nine months, with a non-parole period of two years and two months.
“Your attack on Mr Wanganeen was impulsive and unprovoked,” she said.
“The attack was without any warning or justification, Mr Wanganeen was completely defenceless.”
The sentence was backdated to February 12, 2023, meaning Lovegrove will be eligible for parole next month.
