An alleged parent-poisoning murderer has avoided a conviction for breaching her bail in what prosecution said was a “deliberate and blatant disregard”.
Raelene Polymiadis was sentenced to no further penalty in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday after her lawyer argued she had already served a harsh enough punishment.
A prosecutor told the court Polymiadis was subject to home detention bail on two counts of murder.
The court heard Polymiadis received a pass out to attend at the Ingle Farm medical centre on December 20, 2023.
However, GPS tracking identified she had also attended at the Ingle Farm shopping centre and when contacted about it she stated she needed to fill a script.
The prosecutor said CCTV footage showed Polymiadis arriving at the Ingle Farm shopping centre, meeting with an “unknown female” and browsing a shopping display before leaving.
“CCTV shows that at no time did the defendant attend at a chemist at that shopping centre,” the prosecutor said.
A prosecutor asked for a conviction to be recorded, saying it was a “deliberate and blatant disregard” of her bail conditions.
Polymiadis, 64, of Craigmore, pleaded guilty to one count of failing to comply with her bail.
Polymiadis won bail, due to health concerns, over allegations she used insulin to murder her non-diabetic parents, both 94, in 2022 and 2023.
She has pleaded not guilty to both counts of murder and is listed to stand trial in 2026.
Marie Shaw KC, told the court Polymiadis had no prior criminal history and asked for no conviction to be record.
She said Polymiadis was released on bail after the Supreme Court heard from a diabetes expert that she was suffering “serious difficulties” with her type 1 diabetes while in custody.
“That mismanagement of her type 1 diabetes … had potentially very serious medical implications for her,” Ms Shaw said.
Ms Shaw said Polymiadis was arrested by police over the bail breach on Friday, January 5 and served five days in custody as a result.
The court heard Polymiadis suffered complications while in custody, including being taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital on Sunday when her diabetes became unstable.
“My client has served well beyond what has been put against her as the level of seriousness of this offence,” Ms Shaw said.
Magistrate Natalie Browne opted not to record a conviction against Polymiadis and imposed no further penalty, due to the time she spent in custody.
