Gunner’s new-look Cabinet sworn in at Government House

CHIEF Minister Michael Gunner’s new nine-member cabinet, whose members have been sworn in at Government House today, will be juggling 17 new portfolios between them

COVID-19 ‘pretty much’ the only thing NT Labor campaigned on

CHIEF Minister Michael Gunner says his shock decision to take over as Treasurer from his deputy Nicole Manison shouldn’t be taken as an indictment on her performance.

Mr Gunner dropped the bombshell that he would take over the portfolio and “spearhead the Cabinet’s economic team” while unveiling his new look ministry yesterday.

The nine-member Cabinet, which includes newcomers Kate Worden and Chansey Paech, will be juggling 17 new portfolios between them.

The team will be sworn in at Government House today.

Mr Gunner said former treasurer Ms Manison would now be focusing more on industry. She’s taking on five new roles including Minister for Mining and Industry and Minister for Northern Australia on top of her existing role as Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services.

“If you observe the Cabinet makeup, I’ve given Nicole a s**t-tonne of work there with all those industry portfolios,” he said.

“I see one of the biggest challenges for the Territory is how we step out of the coronavirus crisis, economically and I want to take that challenge on myself.”

Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro slammed the change and said Mr Gunner wasn’t capable enough to be Treasurer with the NT debt set to hit $8.2 billion this financial year.

Cabinet also has a new economic recovery team led by the Chief Minister who will also be Minister for Major Projects and Territory Economic Reconstruction, and Minister for Strategic Defence relations.

Natasha Fyles will lose her role as Attorney-General and Minister for Justice to Selena Uibo.
