CHIEF Minister Michael Gunner has dropped a bombshell announcing he was taking over the role of Treasurer from his deputy Nicole Manison as he revealed his new-look Cabinet.
Experienced backbencher Kate Worden and Speaker Chansey Paech have been included in the new nine-member Gunner Cabinet.
Mr Gunner revealed he would be taking over the role of Treasurer from his deputy, Nicole Manison.
It comes after Labor’s 14 newly elected and re-elected politicians held a Caucus meeting this morning and voted on who would be in Cabinet.
Mr Gunner had two vacancies to fill in Cabinet following the defeat of Territory Families and Energy Minister Dale Wakefield, who lost her Braitling seat, and the retirement of Housing and Public Employment Minister Gerry McCarthy.
Announcing his new leadership team, Mr Gunner said the Cabinet’s task was “to keep steering the Territory through the coronavirus crisis and make the Territory Australia’s comeback capital”.
“This is a jobs-first Cabinet,” Mr Gunner said.
“The economic recovery team is spearheaded by the Chief Minister who will also be Treasurer, Minister for Major Projects and Territory Economic Reconstruction, and Minister for Strategic Defence relations.
“Deputy Chief Minister Nicole Manison will lead a major jobs-focused ministry as Minister for Mining and Industry, Minister for Northern Australia and Trade, Minister for Defence Industries, Minister for Agribusiness and Aquaculture, and Minister for International Education.”
Ms Manison will also continue as Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services.
Natasha Fyles has been stripped of her role as Attorney-General but will continue as Health Minister.
Mr Gunner said Ms Fyles had been tasked with working with the federal government “to pursue opportunities for the Howard Springs facility to be a centre for national resilience”.
In addition to these tasks, Ms Fyles will also be Minister for Tourism and Hospitality, Minister for Major Events, and Minister for Racing, Gaming and Licencing.
Selena Uibo take over Ms Fyles’ job as Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, and will also be Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and the Minister for Treaty.
Eva Lawler will take on a super-portfolio as Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Minister for Renewables and Energy, Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water Security, and Minister for Essential Services.
Lauren Moss has been appointed Minister for Education. Ms Moss is also Minister for Women, Minister for Youth, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for Children.
Newcomer to Cabinet Ms Worden will take on a ministry considered one of the toughest of all in Territory government., Minister for Territory Families and Urban Housing.
She will also serve as Minister for Disabilities, Minister for Sport, and Minister for Multicultural Affairs.
Ms Worden is an experienced backbencher who’s chaired parliamentary committees and has become one of the Gunner Government’s most strident political attack dogs
