THIS is it! Finally. Our Number 1.

Who is the most powerful person in the Northern Territory? Our choice may surprise you.

Well, it’s been a long — and controversial — countdown so we won’t keep you in suspense any longer.

Just click on each of the pictures in our interactive graphic below to find out more about those who wield enormous power in the Territory right now, and why we’ve placed them where we have.

Our pick for the Most Powerful this year will no doubt be seriously controversial.

No sitting NT Chief Minister has ever been named at No.1 in our list, but now, an ex-Chief Minister has.

Former CLP Chief Minister Terry Mills may surprise a whole host of people as our choice for Number 1. But there is no doubt he has the potential to wield enormous power over the Territory’s future right now.

Remember, true power can be both positive ... or dangerous. What Mills’ newly formed party’s influence on next year’s Territory election will be is yet to be seen.

He will no doubt take votes away from the CLP in the 2020 election and will split the conservative vote.

Will that be enough to let Labor off the hook for them to sneak through over the line again for what would be a surprise victory?

Or will Mills’ influence mean he will decide who wins power in a conservative coalition government?

Either way, Mills is both our No.1 Most Powerful and our No.1 Most Dangerous.

What do you think of our picks for Nos. 1 and 2 or, for that matter, the rest of our choices on The List and their rankings?

In theory the NT’s Chief Minister — the leader of our Government — should be at the top of this list every year.

But, as we mentioned, for various reasons none — not one — has ever been named as our No. 1 since we began our list over a decade ago.

That trend continued this year. But there was a twist.

Michael Gunner came in at No. 13, the lowest position a sitting Chief Minister has ever ranked on our Most Powerful list.

Ironically, Gunner has also been ranked the highest a sitting Chief Minister has ever come in on The List, when he was named at No. 2 in 2016.

But, if our list has proved anything, it’s that the mighty can fall at any time.

Controversial? Maybe.

But we thought long and hard about ranking him where we finally did this year and we took care to explain our reasoning.

In the end there weren’t too many complaints about our decision.

In fact, many commenters told us they didn’t believe Gunner should have even been placed as high as he was considering the dire state of our economy.

We can only wait and see where he ends up on The List next year — that is, if he even makes it, of course.
