CAN you go fishing during lockdown? No. Can you go visit family in another household? No. Can you do activities with people from another household? No.

What happens if you do these things and get caught? You’ll get slapped with a $5000 fine.

Territorians who flaunt the NT chief health officer’s five reasons to leave home during the Top End’s lockdown will be fined if caught by authorities. Businesses not permitted to open during this time, such as beauty salons or hairdressers, or restaurants opening up for sit-down dining, will also get fined a whopping $25,280.

The five reasons you can leave home are:

– To receive medical treatment, including Covid testing or vaccination;

– To get essential goods and services, like groceries and medications;

– For work that is considered essential;

– For one hour of outdoor exercise a day within 5 km from your home with one other person or people from your house;

– To provide care and support to a family member or person who cannot support themselves.

NT Police Commissioner Jamie Chalker said as of Tuesday midday, no fines had been given.

“There’s a couple of people who’ve come close,” he said.

“Thankfully through the engagement and the patience of our people, we’ve got compliance which is really what this is all about at the end of the day.

“That being said, our patience will only last so long, so if someone is going to be literally belligerent in respects of understanding the enormity of what this risk poses and being non-compliant we’ll take action, and we’ll take that action in the best interest of the Northern Territory.”
