A 37-YEAR-OLD has died after being hit by a car on the Stuart Hwy last night, only hours after another pedestrian was struck by a car in a separate incident nearby.

Northern Watch Commander Len Turner said police were called to an incident where a vehicle had struck a pedestrian on the inbound lane of the Stuart Hwy near Shiers St intersection in The Narrows just before 9.30pm on Friday.

“The emergency services and St John Ambulance were also called, but unfortunately the pedestrian was pronounced deceased a short time after,” he said.

“Alcohol and speed do not appear to be an issue at this stage.”

Detectives from the Major Crash Investigation Unit attended and continue to investigate the circumstances of the collision.

Anyone who was in the area at the time is asked to contact NT Police on 131 444.

This incident happened only hours after another pedestrian was hit by a car in the same area in the outbound lane of the Stuart Hwy during a separate incident on Friday afternoon.

One man reportedly tripped and then stumbled onto the road and into a moving car, the driver of which stopped to help him.

A group from a block of nearby flats then came to the scene and began attacking the driver.

The motorist defended himself before driving to some nearby shops to call the police and ambulance.

The person who was hit and another person who approached the driver was taken to hospital in stable conditions.

The Northern Territory’s road toll for this year now sits at 21.
