A 60-YEAR-OLD woman has been arrested for allegedly spitting in the face of an ambulance worker coming to her aid.

NT Police Watch Commander Len Turner reported the St John Ambulance officer had stopped to help the woman after she flagged his vehicle down at the entrance of Royal Darwin Hospital, just after 1am today.

Watch Commander Turner said the woman had then allegedly spat at him in the face.

Police have arrested the woman and she is currently in custody.

SJA NT operations manager Craig Garraway told ABC Darwin he understood the paramedic had been flagged down while he was transporting another patient to hospital.

He said the incident was “disappointing” and described the alleged spitting as “disgusting behaviour”.

“Unfortunately the paramedic was trying to do the right thing here and has had to cop that,” he said.

“It seems to be something that continues to occur, no matter how we try and educate the public.”

Watch Commander Turner said it was likely the woman would be charged later today.
