A witness has recalled the moment panic erupted in the wake of an alleged stabbing at the Royal Darwin Show, which has left one boy seriously injured.
NT Police say the boy, aged 15, was allegedly assaulted by another 15-year-old boy with a knife at the showgrounds during the Royal Darwin Show on Saturday.
The incident occurred about 8.20pm.
“Police and St John Ambulance attended, and the victim was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital in a serious condition,” an NT Police spokesperson said.
A search was launched after the boy fled the scene, and was located by police just before 10pm.
“Update - 10.05pm: The 15-year-old alleged offender has been arrested by police and is currently in custody,” a police spokesperson said on Facebook.
A woman at the scene who did not wish to be named said she heard a “commotion” in the wake of the incident.
“All of a sudden there was a lot of commotion and a lot of young people started running towards us, like they were trying to get away,” she told this masthead.
“I saw one young girl, maybe 15 or 16 and she looked terrified.
“I said ‘what happened?’ and she said ‘Someone was stabbed’.”
“We turned around and went the other way but still ended up at the site; it was right out the front of the Music Trip ride and the security and medics were working on him.
“A lot of very scared and traumatised young people.”
A mother of a young girl who witnessed the alleged attack said the boys had been in a fight before the weapon was allegedly pulled.
“She saw the blood everywhere and people running, and crying and screaming to save (the boy),” the mother said.
Just one day ago the Royal Darwin Show posted to Facebook saying they would be bringing in “enhanced security measures at the entry gates”.
“Bag searches and security wanding will be in place at all public entry points,” the post stated.
“Please allow a little extra time for those procedures when you arrive, and have your belongings ready for inspection.
“These measures are all about keeping our community safe, while you enjoy the fun, food and festivities.
“We appreciate your co-operation and patience. We can’t wait to see you there.”
The eyewitness told this masthead while she had seen security guards at the front gate with wands, they were “very sporadic”.
“I walked in without being wanded and so did a lot of others,” she said.
