AN eight-year-Territorian, part owner in one of a promising Clarke Racing dynasty’s mare, avid racing and fashion fan and a Darwin Turf Club young member, Hannah West fits the bill as the Darwin Cup Carnival ambassador like a hoof in a horse shoe.
She is excited for what 2021’s carnival promises, following an interrupted 2020.
“I couldn’t be more excited to see what this carnival brings, not only for patrons but also for local racing and can’t wait to see my own horse, Dizzy Miss Lizzy, run,” she said.

“The turf club last year, as we all did as individuals and organisations, faced struggles in the global pandemic. The turf club did a heap of work, amended their carnival program and still had an amazing Cup Day in particular. This year the cup carnival is back with a full eight day program.”
Ms West is a former media advisor to Health Minister Natasha Fyles.
Darwin Turf Club marketing and media general manager Jamie Chadwick said ticket sales had already reached levels usually seen in May, promising for a busy carnival in the grand stands and under the marquees.
“The numbers are indicating it’s going to be a very strong year, obviously assisted by the fact international travel is compromised but there’s always a big intake of eastern seaboard visitors at that time of year but more so this year with a strong surge of tickets early,” he said.
“We’re on target to be matching numbers in 2017/2018, those sorts of numbers, probably about 15,000/16,000 persons on course which is quite strong numbers. We have the capacity to grow our marquee numbers and add onto those numbers.

“Our capacity areas in terms of internally and the Ted Bailey Grand Stand are already sold out as such, the other areas in the centre field, there’s been a strong uptake in numbers.”
The Great Northern Darwin Cup Carnival begins on Saturday July 3 and runs through to Monday August 2.
