NUTTALL Place will be temporarily closed on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 8pm until 4am, providing greater safety for those looking to enter the Monsoons nightclub.

On Tuesday night, Darwin council approved the proposal form the Australian Venue Co, who own the nightclub, who’s patrons have had to at times spill onto Nuttall Place due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Darwin Council chief executive Scott Waters said a recent crash in the street, where a car ploughed through a fence on the other side of the street, proved the necessity for closing the laneway at peak times.

“(On April 23, an) alleged drunk driver pulled into Nuttall Place (from) Mitchell Street proceeds down Nuttall and crashes into the right hand side fence and bollard,” he said.

“Should that have occurred later in the evening and the vehicle had veered to the left as opposed to the right there absolutely would have been injuries to the people lining up in the area.”

The closure of Nuttall Place would continue until Covid-19 restrictions concluded, which Mr Waters said predominantly revolved around people queuing to scan into the Territory Check-in app.

“We have no negative feedback from police, fire or emergency services, or planning and logistics from the NT Government,” he said.

“We believe this will have as minimal impact as it possibly can while ensuring we have as much safety in place as we possibly can.”

Alderman Robin Knox said she didn’t want to see the closure halted once Covid-19 restrictions concluded, saying it could prove to be a great way to activate the CBD.

“I’ll wait to see result of this trial but maybe the closure of our lanes at night is activating our city and can be very beneficial,” she said.

“If it goes well, maybe we can do something similar there to Austin Lane.”

The decision will be reviewed on September 30, one month after the new council has been elected.
