ALICE SPRINGS Town Council (ASTC) will consider spending $90,000 from its COVID-19 fund to install new desks in the Council Chambers to allow for social distancing.

The expenditure is listed in the Infrastructure Department Report that will be presented at this month’s first ordinary meeting of council tonight.

The report notes that extra desks are needed for to comply with the 1.5m social distancing COVID-19 protocols require.

Mayor Damien Ryan said he intended to start a discussion around the proposal at the meeting but declined to comment further before elected members had a chance to discuss the matter.

Other flagged major projects include $50,000 to build retractable bollards in Todd Mall, which will be used to stop traffic during public events.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars have also been pledged to upgrade parks in town, including Olean­der Park ($142,000) and Ashwin Park ($219,480). The rep­ort also notes that council has applied for grant funding for a new public artwork, which will be located on the roundabout at the Bath Street and Gregory Terrace intersection.

The project, entitled ‘Moths and Caterpillars’, is currently in the conceptual design stage.

In March, a fourth flag pole will be erected on Anzac Hill assuming that council receives approval from the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority, the Heritage Council and RSL.

This fourth flag pole will fly the Torres Strait Islander flag.

The three flag poles currently atop the hill fly the federal flag, the NT flag and the Aboriginal flag.
