POLICE have apprehended a 17-year-old in relation to an incident where a woman was hit in the face and had her phone stolen in the Alice Springs CBD overnight.
Southern Watch Commander Joshua Cunningham said police responded to a large youth disturbance out the front of Uncles Tavern on Gregory St, Alice Springs at about 9pm on Saturday.
“The disturbance was quickly quelled but after speaking to a number of people and it was identified that a robbery had taken place shortly before the disturbance on the corner of Todd St and Stott Tce,” he said.
“The offender has striked a lady to the face before stealing her phone and running from the location. The offender was described as a young, possibly Indigenous male.

“The youth was chased by off-duty members and members of the public through the council lawns on to Gregory St near Uncles Tavern, where a large group of youths turned and surrounded them, preventing them retrieving the phone.
“During the disturbance a number of persons attempting to retrieve the phone and de-escalate the situation where threatened or physically assaulted.”
Cdr Cunningham said the investigation was still in its early stages on Sunday morning, but police have taken a 17-year-old youth into custody who is likely to be charged with engaging in violent conduct and aggravated assault.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed or have video footage of the initial robbery or disturbance to contact Crime Stoppers and reference 9557437 and provide any information they have.
