A toddler who drowned in a remote NT community was undertaking a swimming program
A TODDLER who drowned at a public pool last week was taking part in an Early Learning Program run by the community’s council.

A TODDLER who tragically drowned at a public pool in Kintore last Wednesday was taking part in a swimming program run by the council.
Since the incident MacDonnell Regional Council has closed the three pools it operates and all excursions outside of its Early Learning Centres ceased until further notice immediately following the incident.
The remote Indigenous community of Kintore is known as Walungurru and has a population of about 400 people. It is about 530km west of Alice Springs.

MacDonnell Regional Council chief executive Jeff MacLeod said in a statement: “The death of any child is a tragedy”.
“Sadly, last week on Wednesday December 2, a child passed away at the Council-operated pool in Kintore.
“We express our sincere condolences to the family and the wider Kintore community.
“The child was taking part in an Early Learning Program run by the council in the community.”
“NT WorkSafe has approved the programmed activity of swimming instruction at the Santa Teresa pool this week by Royal Life Saving Australia.
“The incident at Kintore is being investigated by NT Police and NT WorkSafe and MacDonnell Regional Council is fully co-operating with the investigations.
“Out of respect for the family and for cultural reasons, and as the matter is under investigation, it would be inappropriate to make any further comment on the incident.”
