Katherine awarded title of the NT’s top tourism town
Katherine has been named the NT’s top tourism town, in an award part of peak industry gongs the Australian Tourism Awards.

KATHERINE has been named the Northern Territory’s top tourism town, in an award part of peak industry gongs the Australian Tourism Awards (ATA).
The top tourism town awards, which recognise the importance and quality of tourism in regional areas in Australia, were announced last month.
It means Katherine will now progress to the national awards for the chance to win the title of top tourism town in Australia.
Katherine Town Council Mayor Lis Clark said the win was a huge achievement for the Katherine tourism industry that was much deserved after a stellar 2020/21 tourism season.
“Our previous sales record set in 2018/19 was $1.3 million, and for 2020-21 it was $3 million in total bookings,” she said.
“It’s just amazing, everyone has been absolutely shocked at it.

“When you speak to businesses in town, everyone agrees its’ been the best season they’ve ever had, and it’s been a massive boost for the town.
“We congratulate all of the tourism operators well, and hospitality businesses, because it has been great for everybody.”
Ms Clark said Katherine’s tourism rush had likely been driven by Covid-fuelled border restrictions and lockdowns in much of Australia, including in Darwin and Alice Springs, prompting Australians – and especially Territorians – to explore their own backyard.
She also said the NT government’s Territory Tourism Voucher scheme had had a big impact.
“To win this award has meant a lot to a lot of people in Katherine who have worked very hard,” she said.
“We congratulate all of the tourism operators and hospitality businesses (in Katherine), because it has been great for everybody.”
The National Top Tourism Town Awards will be held in Canberra on September 2.
