THE leading global energy producer Energy Developments, which is building Jabiru’s new 1.4mW hybrid power station, has put in its application to the NT Utilities Commission for a licence to generate electricity for sale to licensed retailers in Jabiru.
In accordance with regulatory practice, the Utilities Commission is seeking submissions regarding the licence application from system participants and stakeholders.
The power station will be connected to Power and Water Corporation’s electricity distribution network through two 11kV connection points located within a PwC substation at the Jabiru site. From there, PwC will distribute the electricity to the Jabiru township.
Energy Developments, which will own and operate the Jabiru Hybrid Renewable Project, has started site clearing and preparation for the construction of the new power station and solar farm.
Clearing works will include earthmoving activities and controlled burning.
Once the site is fully prepared, EDL will start transporting construction materials to site.
Funded by the Northern Territory government, the Jabiru Hybrid Renewable Project will integrate solar and diesel generation with a battery, and provide Jabiru with reliable energy that is at least 50 per cent from renewable sources over the long term.
The project will integrate 3.9mW solar generation and a 3mW/5mWh battery energy storage system, with 4.5mW diesel generation to balance sustainability with reliability.
Up to 30 jobs will be created at the peak of the project’s construction, though on average EDL expects 21 positions will need to be filled.

The power station, at Elsherana Rd on the other side of the Arnhem Highway 2km from the Jabiru township, will be completed by the end of 2021, and the solar farm and battery will come online in early 2022.
EDL generates electricity for sale in the National Electricity Market in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia and provides end-to-end generation solutions including Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) compression and transportation in the Northern Territory and Western Australia.
A key focus for the EDL Group is the sale of electricity directly to customers in remote areas outside of the NEM.
The Jabiru Power Station and the requested Generation Licence will support the planned development of this aspect of the business.
