THE hybrid power station to be built in Kakadu’s largest town will include 4.5MW of diesel generation, solar panels and a battery, the company behind the project has revealed.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner, as revealed by the NT News, announced during his Year Ahead speech on Monday that the government had awarded a contract, the amount of which cannot be disclosed, to Brisbane-based company Energy Developments to build a hybrid solar and diesel power station at Jabiru.

The project comes as Jabiru, a town built to support the now-defunct Ranger uranium mine, begins its post-mining future.

Energy Developments has since confirmed the power station will have 4.5MW of diesel energy and 3.9MW of solar energy, supported by a 3MW-5MW battery.

The company said this would “balance sustainability with reliability”.

“Once completed, our hybrid renewable power station will provide Jabiru with at least 50 per cent renewable energy over the long term, without compromising power quality or reliability,” EDL chief executive James Harman said.

Construction of the project will begin shortly, with the government indicating as early as April.

Up to 30 jobs will be created at the peak of the project’s construction, though on average EDL expects 21 positions will need to be filled.

According to the company, the diesel power station will be completed by the end of 2021 and the solar farm and battery will come online in early 2022.

The NT government has confirmed the Power and Water Corporation will operate and maintain Jabiru’s electricity network and will be handed $10m to upgrade the system in preparation of connection to the power station.

The government has promised no power bill price increases at Jabiru.

The government will also build, in the second half of 2021, a new health clinic at Jabiru that includes a new four-chair renal facility.

A partnership with NBN will also provide Jabiru with fibre-to-the-premises later this year.
