AUSTRALIAN Federal police are investigating an incident on an Air Canada flight from Vancouver to Brisbane, during which a passenger allegedly tried to open a plane door mid-flight.

AFP officers met the flight in Brisbane early this morning and took the passenger into custody.

An AFP spokesman said a 25-year-old man from Currimundi on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland was escorted from the plane.

“After assisting police with their enquiries he was allowed to leave the airport pending further investigation,” said the spokesman.

“Police enquiries into this matter are continuing. No charges have been laid at this time.”

Air Canada General Manager Australia New Zealand Paul McLean confirmed there was a disruptive passenger on board the flight, and they requested authorities meet the plane when it landed.

“The safety and wellbeing of Air Canada passengers are always our first priority,” said Mr McLean.

“Air Canada has zero tolerance for disruption on board our flights.”

Air Canada only began non-stop flights between Brisbane and Vancouver in June.

It is unknown if alcohol was a factor in the alleged disruptive behaviour.

Scarily, passengers attempting to open plane doors mid-flight are not that rare.

In May a woman tried to open the front cabin door of a Jetstar plane as the flight approached Avalon from Sydney.

And in August, an Air Alaska flight between New York and Seattle was diverted to Minneapolis when a passenger tried to open the rear cabin door.

Fortunately it is physically impossible to open plane door when the aircraft is pressurised and in flight.
