A British influencer plunged to his death after climbing up one of Spain’s highest bridges without safety equipment.
Lewis Stevenson was scaling the Castilla La Mancha bridge in Talavera de la Reina on Sunday, trying to take a daredevil picture, when he tragically died.
The 26-year-old, who had been climbing for fun for over five years, was warned by his family not to clamber up the 192 metre bridge, but despite their desperate pleas, he took the challenge.
“We all tried to talk him out of it. We were always trying to talk him out of doing things but that was the way he was,” Lewis’ grandfather Clifford Stevenson, 70, told the Daily Mail.
“He loved doing it, always went out there believing he’d be alright.
“He did what he did for his own pleasure. He did not get any money for it, he was an adventurer”.
Lewis’ social media photos show the young Brit engaging in various daredevil acts including one atop a New York skyscraper and another resting on a metal beam overlooking the City of London.
One of his most recent stunts, also known as “rooftopping” is from October 3 on top of a stand at Nottingham Forest’s ground.
According to the Daily Mail, authorities in Spain said Lewis was accompanied by a 24 year old friend. It is said that the two were a quarter of the way across the 192 metre bridge before he lost his grip and fell.
Local councillor Macareza Munoz said accessing the bridge was “totally banned” as Lewis’ body was recovered at 7.14am local time on Sunday.
“The Councillor for Citizen Security, Macarena Munoz, has confirmed the death of a young man after he fell from the Castilla-La Mancha bridge,” the Town Council of Talavera de la Reina said in a statement.
“He was a 26-year-old Englishman who fell while climbing the aforementioned bridge, something which the councillor has made clear is totally prohibited and that we have reiterated on numerous occasions cannot be done under any circumstances.
“According to what we have been able to establish they had come to Talavera to climb the bridge and create content for social media, which has resulted in this unfortunate and sad outcome.
“The judge and the forensic doctor have already authorised the removal of the body, which has been transferred to the funeral parlour,” it concluded.
Lewis’ girlfriend Savannah Parker has since taken to Facebook to share an emotional post, describing her partner’s death as a “nightmare”.
“It’s 5am and I haven’t eaten or slept. Someone tell me this is a nightmare,” she wrote on Tuesday.
“I feel violently sick at the fact you’re not coming back. please come back. answer the phone (sic).
“Thank you everyone for your messages and love. if I’ve not replied know that I’ve seen it and appreciate it. I can’t reply to everyone im too overwhelmed. anyone in a relationship PLEASE hug your person extra tight for me (sic).”
Friends and social media followers of the 26-year-old have also flooded social media with messages of condolence.
“Knowing you has been one of the greatest privileges of my life,” a fellow “rooftopping’ enthusiast wrote.
“And losing you is the greatest sadness of my life. No amount of words on a stupid Instagram post will ever describe how much I miss you.
“You will always be the bravest, most caring and funny person I’ve ever known. I’m proud of every building, every rooftop, every moment of our time together,
“My best friend, my brother. Rest easy, we’ll meet again one day,” he wrote.
