An Australian fisherman shared a frightening ordeal from his recent trip to Baja Mexico
An Aussie has captured the harrowing moment he “almost died” during a fishing trip in the same region where two surfers were executed in an alleged cartel robbery.
An Aussie YouTuber has filmed the harrowing moment he “almost died” after being bitten by a rattlesnake while recovering from food poisoning and Covid in a notorious Mexican hotspot.
Adam Cavanagh, who runs a fishing lure business and vlogs on YouTube, was documenting his travels down the coast of Baja California in Mexico.
The region is popular with tourists for its prime surfing and fishing, but drew headlines in April after two Australian brothers were executed in an alleged cartel robbery gone wrong.
Mr Cavanagh shared a 50-minute video capturing his terrifying ordeal last week, describing it as “an adventure that went wrong, terribly wrong”.
The video began innocently enough, with Mr Cavanagh hunting for a range of exotic fish including “Roosterfish, Crevalle Jack and Cubera snapper”.
But things took a turn for the worse after a confrontation with a local woman in a small village who told him he wasn’t welcome to fish.
“I started this road trip here in Baja and basically just got sick straight away, haven’t really been able to do much, just been kind of wasting time,” he said.
Mr Cavanagh revealed he thought initially he might have had his “drink spiked” on a night out.
“I honestly feel really, really bad,” he said.
“I’m super sick with food poisoning and without knowing it at the time, I had contracted Covid-19.
“But it gets worse, when I go outside to throw up I then get struck unknowingly by a rattlesnake. This is so bad, I feel like dying.”
The seasoned fisherman thought he had stepped on a cactus as he left his tent late at night, but had actually been bitten by a venomous snake.
The fishing identity said he slept for another 24 hours before making the decision to end the trip early.
On his way back into town, Mr Cavanagh went to a local hospital, where doctors confirmed he had been bitten on the “ankle bone” by a rattlesnake.
“This explains why I was feeling so sick and slept for over 24 hours shivering, my whole body could not move,” he said.
Hundreds of fans took to the comments section to share their support and praise the fishing expert for making it out of his trip safely.
“Just glad you made it out okay. Stay safe. To fish another day,” one fan wrote.
“I am so glad you had the insight to go seek help! Even more, happy to see you still with us, getting bit by a rattle snake and covid and still pulling through is amazing,” a second wrote.
“You are the living proof that we can fight it out, against the elements and against what is thrown at us sometimes in life,” a third wrote.
The picturesque coast of Baja California ranks high for violent crime in Mexico.
In 2023, 68.5% of adults there felt their state was unsafe, as per the National Institute of Statistics and Geography.
