Surprise sale before Qantas, Jetstar hike airfares

There is just hours left of Qantas’ surprise sale before airfares jump on Friday for the national carrier and budget airline Jetstar.

Qantas to hike airfares to offset skyrocketing cost of fuel

There is less than 24 hours to score discounted Qantas airfares starting from $99 in the airline’s surprise domestic sale before it hikes ticket prices on Friday.

Domestic and international Qantas ticket prices will jump by 3.5 per cent with the national carrier citing soaring jet fuel costs as the reason for the rise.

The 72-hour sale was launched on Monday and includes sale fares to more than 60 domestic destinations.

More than 40 routes are on sale for less than $150 for travel periods during this year and next year.

Qantas said the sale was part of its commitment to regular sales and special offers as fares increase on Friday.

The cheapest one-way sale fares include Launceston to Melbourne for $99, Adelaide to Melbourne for $125, Melbourne to Sydney for $145, Brisbane to Cairns for $149, Brisbane to Hamilton Island and Sunshine Coast to Melbourne for $159.

The sale ends at midnight Thursday, October 26, unless sold out prior.

There is also a five-day Points Plus Pay sale ending Friday, October 27.

Half the number of points are required to book First, Business or Premium Economy seats on any international Qantas-marketed Points Plus Pay flights (with a QF flight number).

It is the airline’s “biggest-ever discount” on international Points Plus Pay flights. The sale excludes reward seats.

Qantas is not the only Aussie airline currently running a 72-hour domestic sale.

Virgin Australia’s sale with airfares starting from $86 also ends Thursday at midnight.

The cheapest is a flight from Brisbane to Proserpine in the Whitsunday region for $86 one-way on Economy Lite and from Sydney to Launceston in Tasmania for the same price.

Passengers who are part of the airline’s Velocity Frequent Flyer Loyalty program will also be able to double Status Credits on eligible bookings until Monday, October 30.

Qantas and Jetstar fares increase from Friday

The Qantas Group revealed last week there would be an average fare increase of 3.5 per cent for Qantas and 3 per cent for Jetstar, which would come into effect from Friday, October 27.

“As flagged last month, sustained increases in fuel prices are placing upward pressure on fares,” Qantas said in the statement.

“The Qantas Group has absorbed recent fuel cost increases but, given current tensions in the Middle East and broader economic factors including a weaker Australian dollar, the price of fuel is expected to remain elevated for some time.”

A spokesperson said the increase in fares was to recover “some of this higher cost going forward while continuing to absorb the remainder”.
