The Qantas Group has appointed a new CEO to lead its regional airline QantasLink amid a leadership shake-up.

Rachel Yangoyan, who has been with Qantas for 20 years, will take over the role from John Gissing.

It was revealed back in June that Mr Gissing, who has been with the Qantas Group for almost 25 years, would retire in early November as part of a number of senior management changes across the Group.

He will take on an advisory role for the next 12 months.

Ms Yangoyan has worked in executive roles in customer experience, operations, airports, loyalty and strategy.

Her most recent job was to lead the “entry into service” program for Qantas’ major fleet renewal.

“Qantas started in outback Australia and it’s an honour to be taking on the role of QantasLink CEO and working with our people on improving how we serve regional communities as well as the resources sector,” she said in a statement.

Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson, who took over the top job in September when Alan Joyce walked away two months early, said Ms Yangoyan had “a deep understanding of what it takes to run an airline”.

“As CEO of QantasLink, she’ll be responsible for our regional and charter operations, which are key parts of our business and also key to the role we play in connecting remote parts of Australia,” she said.

“This appointment completes the new leadership team structure we announced earlier in the year, which is focused on dealing with the challenges and opportunities now in front of us.”

It follows last week’s announcement that former Qantas CEO contender and head of Qantas Loyalty Olivia Wirth would leave the airline next year.

Qantas chairman Richard Goyder also announced his early retirement this month.
