Neil Druckmann, the co-president of Naughty Dog and creative director of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, has said that the Uncharted series will no longer be developed.

Created by Amy Hennig, the Uncharted series was first launched with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune on the PS3 in 2006, and subsequently spawned three sequels and multiple spin-offs. The most recent main series game, Uncharted 4, was released in 2016 for the PlayStation 4.

Despite the long gap since the last release, some fans held out hope that the series would come back after Naughty Dog had finished with The Last of Us Part 2, but Druckmann has poured water on those hopes. In an interview with Buzzfeed, Druckmann said that the studio was “moving on”.

“For us, Uncharted was insanely successful,” Druckmann told Buzzfeed, “Uncharted 4 was one of our best-selling games, and we’re able to put our final brushstroke on that story and say that we’re done. We’re moving on.”

He went on to say that Naughty Dog is in a “very privileged” position with Sony, as Sony doesn’t require the studio to make sequels for the sake of profit or to keep franchises alive. Instead, he said, the studio is allowed to make what it wants.

Druckmann also says that The Last of Us isn’t guaranteed to get more sequels either, despite his teasing at a new game on social media. He says that he’s open to the idea, as long as the studio “can come up with a compelling story that has this universal message and statement about love”.

“With The Last of Us, it’s up to us whether we want to continue it or not,” Druckmann said, “If we can’t come up with something, we have a very strong ending with Part 2 and that will be the end”.

Druckmann, who also helped create the television adaptation of The Last of Us, recently took to Twitter to thank fans for their positive reactions to the show.

In other Sony game adaptation news, Amazon recently announced it was making a live-action God of War show last month. The series will reportedly be based on 2018’s God of War for the PlayStation 4, and is being headed up by The Wheel of Time’s Rafe Judkins.
