“He was an incredibly talented footballer and a great young man,” said Keebra Park SHS coach Peter Norman.
“That’s why we’re so proud to represent his foundation and play for something a little bit more than just two points next Wednesday.”
Proudest of all will be Redcliffe SHS outside back Khan Turnbull, one of two inaugural recipients of the Liam Hampson Scholarship. The other is Keebra Park SHS student Tomasi Vaieai.
Turnbull said the scholarship, sponsored by Hampo’s Youth Foundation, was a “great honour’’.
“It has changed my life for the better,’’ said Turnbull, a model student who commutes each morning from Caboolture to attend school at Redcliffe SHS.
“Hampo’s Youth Foundation has helped me mentally and with the physical side of things as well.
“I have been lucky to be paired up with Tom Gilbert (Dolphins and Maroons forward) who is mentoring me, and also Jarrett Boland (Redcliffe Q Cup) who is another mentor.
“It is a great foundation which has helped my family’s financial situation as well.
“It pays for schooling, football, gym, dietician and gives me private tutoring along with an upgraded new laptop.
“It was such a great honour to be the first recipient.’”
Hampson’s mother Lorna said one of the driving forces in starting Hampo’s Youth Foundation was the “hundreds of cards we received from Redcliffe SHS students telling us how he impacted their lives.
“We felt we owned it to Liam to keep his legacy alive and continue his work.’’
