The Ipswich State High School are on a hot streak, three wins from three games and entering the school holidays with an unbeaten record following a gutsy 24-12 triumph over Wavell SHS on Wednesday.

It took everything and more from the home side to overcome a Wavell outfit wonderfully spearheaded by kicking ace Zac Herdegen, who was yellow-carded five minutes from full-time when Wavell were closing in down 18-12.

Herdegen, mistake free No. 13 Charlie Dickson, crafty five-eighth and goalkicker Timahna Tandy, tireless second rower Maddox Goodwin and spark plug Robertson Tusi Tofu were sharp for the visitors – but none sharper than Tom Parker, whose razor sharp reflexes early in the second half brought about the turning point.

Down 12-6 at oranges, Ipswich went bang to score two tries in the opening 10 minutes of the second half to snatch a 16-12 lead and go on to keep it.

Parker read the defence and jumped out of the line to pluck an errant pass and storm away downfield over 60m to take a four-point lead.

It was the try of the game, but equally as impressive and important was Chris Simpson’s to begin the second half in style for Ipswich.

Boundless winger Ezekiel Paulo scorched away down the right touchline after the Ipswich backs moved it swiftly through the hands.

There he was, right wing Paulo, in his first Langer Trophy game, charging upfield before being brought down just shy of the line.

Simpson then scooted over to grab Ipswich’s first lead of the game before a penalty goal from Saifiti Junior Saifiti and a telling try by Tarell Indich nearing full time saw Ipswich spring away from Wavell.

WALTERS CUP

In the Walters Cup clash, Ipswich SHS showed they are the team to beat this season, with a 40-14 win over Wavell SHS making them the premiership frontrunners.

Tomu Cook was electric at right centre, but it was a stirring team effort which was required by the home side to topple a highly talented Wavell outfit.

Like they have been doing all season, Ipswich started fast and piled on points when momentum was in their favour.

The injection of crafty kicker Tj Sauaso at halfback was everything for Ipswich, the headgear-wearing ace at his best grubber kicking.

With his deft attacking kicks, the right edge dynamic duo of Tomu Cook and Innocent Baruani firing and lightning backs Ira Yeatman (fullback) and MacGuiness Tinanga (five-eighth) on song, Ipswich jumped out to a 22-0 lead and Wavell never recovered.

There were plenty of highlights produced by Wavell, like the incredible hands of centre Billo Wotton, the organisation skills of half Charlie Webb and the second-half resurgence inspired by middle forwards Israel Faialaga and Mataora Marino.

But none trumped Tiananga’s scintillating try, set up by right centre Cook.

It was a beauty, with Cook powering through the line and offloading back inside to Tiananga who was bursting through in support.

That was the exclamation point on Ipswich’s 26-point win, their third to head into the holidays searing hot.

Ipswich are flying in the Langer Trophy after their captain Sam Martin stole the match from Mabel Park SHS last week. His matchwinning try from a dummy-half run saw them escape 22-21 victors.

But the foundations for that win were laid through the middle of the field, where barnstorming 17-year-old prop Xzavier Timoteo ran hard and pulled off one of the biggest hits seen so far this season.

It was a rib-crunching tackle from the Sydney Roosters’ latest academy signing.

Timoteo, who earlier this year played for the Bulldogs Harold Matthews side, has signed with the Sydney glamour club, who already have the Va’a Brothers, Xavier and De La Salle (both St Mary’s College old boys), Ben Uini (Wavell SHS alumni) and Aholoka Toia (Redcliffe SHS past student).

Timoteo’s bash brother this season, Kanaan Magele, is also on their books.

Timoteo said he had his mother, Sharon, to thank for enrolling him at Ipswich SHS in Year 7, which had led to expert tuition on and off the field by the school’s coaches.

“I owe mum everything,” he said.

“Ipswich SHS has helped me to become a better person. It has made me a better man.”
