A golden try scored by Gabirle Salela’a and an explosive 30m individual try from Mason Barber separated Keebra Park SHS from Redcliffe SHS’s historic first ever win.

Redcliffe appeared hungry to unfurl the banners for their first win in the Langer Trophy, trailing by only four points at the main break, before Keebra Park came alive in the second.
Three straight tries for the visitors put paid to Redcliffe’s hopes as the Gold Coast school ran out 28-10 victors.

The run of points included a sweeping 70m team try and then a stunning four-pointer by fullback Barber which blew open a gap between the two sides.

Cameron scampered 15m to score after a flowing interchange from beyond the halfway line between halfback Daniel Rankena, centre Joseph Tupose and five-eight Justus Lowndes, elevating Keebra Park to a 16-6 lead.

Barber then produced one of his special efforts, gliding over from 30m after spearing through a gap created by a collision between two Redcliffe defenders.

Down 22-6, Redcliffe pegged a try back after Grady Payne put his winger Jack O’Hagan over, but Keebra half Rakena then produced a lovely ball to his prop Zac Kumbomang who scored late.

It was a terrific tussle as Redcliffe came hard at Keebra with a willing middle forward rotation.

With Eagles front rower Jarius Halahala lighting a match, Redcliffe exploded out of the blocks.

Redcliffe SHS centre Seuifalemau Jordan Seuao opened the scoring with a try on debut, stepping back on the inside and beating the cover defence to the line.

But what Seuao could do at one end, Keebra Park centre Joseph Tupuse managed at the other, with a side stepping performance that put his left winger Tino Formai over in the corner.

Redcliffe prop Halahala was outstanding early as Redcliffe shaded their rivAls, but Keebra Park battleships Isopo Taunuu and Zac Kumbamong gathered momentum for their side around the middle.

Having been on the front foot early, Keebra were all of a sudden running down hill, helped by a powerful dart at the line by halfback Daniel Rakena who scored next to the uprights to give his side the lead.

Redcliffe then regained some footing, and trailing just 10-6 at the break, they were well in the match.

WALTERS CUP
Keebra Park SHS’s forwards cleared the path for a rollicking 42-6 Walters Cup win over Redcliffe SHS at Kayo Stadium.

Keebra’s forwards were outstanding across the first 15 minutes as the visitors established an 18-6 lead before Redcliffe gained parity.

But early in the second half Keebra Park halfback Harvey Smith cracked the match open with a beautiful solo try in the second half, raising his side to 24-6.

Redcliffe centre Kyron Arthy produced the run of the match, a bulldozing effort past eight defenders before he was halted.

Arthy almost scored in the second half as well, but the tackle of the match by Keebra winger Arjay-Troy Sharrock prevented a try under the posts.

PREVIEW

Keebra Park and Redcliffe march into their Langer Trophy showdown on Wednesday with two things on their mind: winning, and honouring the memory of Keebra alumni Liam Hampson.

Tragically killed in an overseas accident in 2022, Hampson was a student at Keebra Park before becoming a teacher’s aid at Redcliffe while playing for the Dolphins’ Queensland Cup side.

Keebra coach Peter Norman said the clashes between Keebra Park and Redcliffe at schoolboy level were always played in honour of Hampson.

“We’ve spent time to make sure the boys understand the legacy Liam left behind and what the program stands for.

“So it’s going to be a massive occasion.

Liam Hampson and AJ Brimson were the best of mates.

An integral part of Keebra’s program in 2016, Norman caoched Hampson during his senior years before he played in the Queensland Cup.

He played alongside the likes of current NRL figures Payne Haas, David Fifita, Tanah Boyd and Moeaki Fotuaika during this time.

“He was an incredibly talented footballer and a great young man,” said Norman.

“That’s why we’re so proud to represent his foundation and play for something a little bit more than just two points next Wednesday.”

Redcliffe coach Jay Wilkinson supported Norman’s words, describing Hampson’s personality as infectious.

“It work a tough time and he was one of those people that no one could say a bad word about him.” he said

“This will always be a game the schools look forward to.

“Peter coached Liam so a lot of (Keebra) staff know him well and then he worked at our school so, so do our staff.

“It’s about working hard to keep his memory alive and help Hampo’s Youth Foundation gain more exposure so people are aware.”

Norman said a period of mourning had since been replaced with the young star’s legacy at both Keebra and Redcliffe as a student, athlete, staff member of ultimate mentor.

“You talk about it enough... all the good times, and actually have a smile on your face remembering what an impact Liam had on his teammates,” he said.

Last year, Hampson’s sister and parents attended the clash, speaking to the boys pre-game as part of their work for Hampo’s Youth Foundation.

Gold Coast Titans star AJ Brimson, who was best mates with Liam, continues advocating as an ambassador for the locally-run foundation.

“He’s (Brimson) come in and spoken to the boys and presented them with their jerseys,” Norman said.

The match is tipped to be a close contest, and the Liam Hampson Cup raises those stakes even higher.

“Redcliffe will be tough again, they have a large number of boys who played in the schoolboys for Sunshine Coast,” said Norman.

“It’s a tough competition, a short season, and every game counts.”

Norman is confident the side’s experience travelling to Caloundra in round two will come in handy, and gave his boys the Friday morning off training to help prepare their bodies.

They’ll have one session Monday morning before a quick turnaround for the 4pm kick-off on Wednesday,” he said.

“They played Palm Beach coming off a surprise loss in round 1.

“Based on the score, it definitely wasn’t terrible... I expected PBC to come out and be fired up with a point to prove.”

Wilkinson is equally confident the home game advantage, coupled with consistent improvement in previous weeks, will pay off.

“We’ve been fortunate enough to play all our games at home so far... it’s certainly an advantage for any school because there is a bit of travel.

“Last week we had a fairly big crowd so hopefully that happens again,” he said.

“You’ve just got to be ready each week, be ready and put yourself in the right position at the right time.”

How have they faired so far?

With a 2-0 win record to start the season, Norman said he’s happy where the squad sits, but there’s still room for improvement.

“It (the win over Caloundra) was a really good performance, and in particular I was really happy with our first half... still some things to work on with execution in the second half,” he said.

“Maybe a bit of fatigue and concentration areas.”

Keebra led 12-0 at halftime and went on to win 20-12, with Norman citing the long bus drive and unorthodox circumstances may have played a part in the second half drop-off.

“We just chipped away, so that’s definitely something to work on in terms of putting out a consistent performance for 60 minutes,” he said.

“(Caloundra) had a good following.

“When they scored their first try in the second half, it woke their crowd up.

“We showed some good resilience to wrestle the momentum back, take control of the game and win.”
