JOCK Zonfrillo, the chef behind trailblazing Adelaide restaurant Orana, has been named one of 10 finalists for a prestigious global award.

The Basque Culinary World Prize recognises chefs who reach a broader sphere of influence beyond the kitchen and play a part in “transforming society through gastronomy”.

Zonfrillo was nominated for his work in preserving the memory of the native peoples of Australia through their food, including visiting hundreds of remote communities, documenting their ingredients and investigating their uses.

Other finalists run restaurants or other food-related projects in countries including Turkey, Peru, Spain, Norway and the US.

The winner, announced on July 24, will receive a prize of 100,000 euros ($158,000 AUD) to spend on a project “expressing the transformative power of the kitchen”.
